Courtney Mattheis
Owner & Artistic Director

Courtney (Powell) Mattheis was born and started her dance career in Amarillo, TX.  At the tender age of 5, she began studying Classical Ballet & Jazz technique at Hess School of Dance.  That same year she was invited to perform in the Lone Star Ballets annual production of The Nutcracker: this is would become her "dance home" for the next 14 years.  At 14, she began teaching and choreographing for Hess school of Dance.  While in high school she also cheered and taught dance.  She also began to perform for various dance productions above her age category such as, The West Texas A&M University Dance Ensemble. In 2003, using her gifts of dance and beauty she entered the Miss Amarillo Pageant won and went on to compete for Miss Texas.
In 2005 she relocated to Los Angeles where she earned a spot on the LA Avengers dance team an Arena Football League,.
In 2011, after a few years of balancing her careers in both Dance instruction and the corporate world, Courtney decided to take a leap of faith and open Courtney’s School of Dance.  Forming a dance school that focused on classical ballet, jazz and tap was a dream realized early on in her life.   Courtney ascertained over the course of her dance career that qualified dance schools are not a tangible opportunity for minority youth. CSD opened its doors in Gardena, CA with 19 dedicated students and has grown to over 150+.  As CSD continues to grow, it will always remain deeply rooted in the city of Gardena.  In 2012 Courtney was the recipient of Small Business of the Year Award in Sacramento, presented by Senator Roderick Wright.
Since the inception of CSD, Courtney has been provided numerous opportunities for students and their families to contribute to community events in Gardena, The South Bay and other Los Angeles County cities. CSD maintains an outstanding reputation in the community and receives multiple requests for performance entertainment for events such as; The Women's Health Expo of Los Angeles, City Parades, Festivals, Annual Corporate celebrations, The Chamber of Commerce Backpack Give-away, Susan G Kolmen’s Relay For Life campaigns and State Assembly Woman swearing in ceremony for Hon. Autumn R. Burke of the 62nd District.
Courtney has learned to utilize all her dancers and their families to constantly create awareness and opportunities to give back to the community that supports them. Annually CSD holds various drives such as; The Goodwill shoe & clothing drive, Salvation Army’s Toys For Tots and a food collection drive for Gardena’s Food Bank. By holding such drives Courtney, her dancers, their families and partners of CSD stay cognizant of all the fortunate things they are able to provide and participate in.
In 2014, Courtney partnered with the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation implementing a reputable dance program in two local parks, called WE Dance! We dance is a low to no cost dance program, exclusive to families in communities surrounding these two city parks in Los Angeles.

With the support of the community and other local businesses, Courtney will continue to educate and provide dance instruction in the Gardena area. Providing a superior dance education and experience, especially to disadvantaged youth who may have never been afforded the opportunity to get a glimpse into the classical world of dance is Courtney Mattheis’ main focus. Further driving home one of Courtney’s core principles, that classical dance should be available to everyone.
